The Research Committee on Literary Theory (RCLT) aims to develop theoretical studies relevant to the study of literature from an international point of view. In accordance with the Statutes of the AILC/ICLA (article I), it attempts to realize this objective through international cooperation. Its objective is to lead and promote thinking on the intellectual foundations, the means, the history, the contemporary developments and the future perspectives of literary theory. The committee's work focuses on the contribution of comparative studies to the theory of literature and to a general philosophy of literary texts and practices, particularly in the production of original theoretical, poetic and aesthetic concepts and paradigms. Its research aims to shed light on the way in which comparativist theories and thinking about literary practices accompany the evolution and transformation of literary practices themselves, and to help identify the role they play in the general economy of cultural representations and in the formation of imaginary worlds.

The committee consists of no more than twenty, and no fewer than six members, including its two officer members, elected for a period of 3 years and eligible for re-election once, with special attention to theoretical and regional diversity. It is chaired by a President, supported by a Secretary. It meets every year in a different country for a workshop organised by one of the committee members on a theoretical question; a list of the topics addressed since 1998 can be found on the website of the Committee. The proceedings of these workshops are regularly published in peer-reviewed journals. The RCLT website also showcases the latest publications of its members, relevant to a general theory of comparative literature.

ICLA members can follow the RCLT's current activities on its website. They are welcome to participate in the sessions organised by the RCLT at each ICLA/AILC congress, by submitting a paper proposal in response to the relevant Research Committee Group Session calls.

ICLA members wishing to join the RCLT should contact the RCLT's Nominating Commission through the RCLT's Secretary and/or President (names and contact at https://iclatheory.org/members/). They will be asked to provide a CV and a sample of relevant publications; the Committee votes on applications during its annual meetings.

Early Career scholars are most welcome to join the committee.
