Call for Applications for the 2025 edition of the ICLA-AILC Best Translation Prize

The ECARE Committee of the AILC-ICLA is pleased to announce the Call for Applications for the 2025 edition of its Best Translation Prize which supports and recognises the work of early career researchers (ECRs). 

This triannual prize awards an outstanding translation of scholarly work pertinent to the wide field of comparative literary studies between any two languages. It can be in the form of a published article, chapter, or other short work, by an early-career scholar in the period between ICLA Congresses. Applications can be made via nomination of a piece for an award or via direct application by the translator of any qualifying piece. The nominee or candidate must be an active ICLA member.

The deadline for submission is 30th April 2025, 23.59pm GMT. Nominations/applications will also be considered by the ICLA Research Committee on Translation. For this round of the award, the cut dates for publication (online and/or in press) are 02 January 2022 – 30th April 2025.

The prize consists of:

  • Award of a cash prize of USD $1000 to the translator of the selected piece.
  • Announcement of the name and institutional affiliation of the winning translator and their publication on the AILC-ICLA Website and Newsletter.
  • Announcement of the name and institutional affiliation of the winning translator and their publication during the General Assembly of the Triennial 2025 AILC-ICLA Congress in Seoul.
  • Abstract of the translation will be published in the issue of Recherche Littéraire/Literary Research after the prize award.

Application process:

  • Deadline for nomination/application: 30th April 2025, 23.59pm GMT.
  • The applicant must be an active ICLA member at an early-career stage (ECR) at the time of the application. ECR is here defined as academics in possession of a doctoral degree, or equivalent, who either hold or are in search of post-doctoral positions, fellowships and/or in temporary or part-time academic posts. We also consider ECRs those who have obtained a full-time, tenure- or permanent-track academic position up to 36 months from their date of employment.
  • Awards are expected to be announced during the 2025 AILC-ICLA Congress in Seoul, Korea.
  • Applications must be made via this online formhttps://forms.gle/EurSnTtbrWuhVhVG7and must contain the following attached files (all should be in MS Word or PDF format, and all – but the copy of the source text and published translation –  should be in English or French):
    • A complete academic CV
    • A short cover letter contextualizing the translation in relation to the field of comparative literature.
    • A copy of the source text.
    • A copy of the published translated text.

Please note that any payments related to the award of this prize will be made after the planned award announcement date. The payment lead time can also be affected by procedures related to international payment procedures which are beyond the control of the AILC-ICLA.
