International conference: "Cultures in Movement, 19th–21st Centuries: The Stakes of Changing Cultures, Asia / the Americas and/or the Americas / Asia." 10–11 October 2013, Faculté de Lettres, Langues, Arts et Sciences Humaines (FLASH), Université de La Rochelle, France.

International conference: “Cultures in Movement, 19th–21st Centuries: The Stakes of Changing Cultures, Asia / the Americas and/or the Americas / Asia.” 10–11 October 2013, Faculté de Lettres, Langues, Arts et Sciences Humaines (FLASH), Université de La Rochelle, France.

This conference is part of a larger research project focusing on societies, exchanges, and power in the Americas and the Asia/Pacific region, as well as questions of identity representation on an international scale. More precisely, it might be useful to re-think the very notion of culture by examining the experiences/situations and the representations of those who chose—or were forced—to change cultures. The primary goal is to study a cultural displacement within the geographical confines of the Americas / Asia-Pacific region, in which the CRHIA (Research Centre for Atlantic and International History) specializes. But beyond a simple study of migration, the secondary goal of this conference is to re-examine the very model of integration as it has sometimes been defined by historians, sociologists, and anthropologists (see for example Communalism and Globalization in South Asia and its Diaspora by Deana Heath and Chandana Mathur, Routledge, 2010 and Le Monde romanesque chinois au XXe siècle: Modernités et identités by Zhang Yinde, Honoré Champion, 2003).

Several approaches are possible beyond the political and practical aspects of mobility. Broader definitions of nationality such as trans-nationality, multi-nationality, and complex cultural identity could be proposed. For example, in his writings Du Weiming has shown that globalization has encouraged the emergence of a “Cultural China” that questions popular definitions of nationality and diaspora and redefines the interactions between center and periphery. Examinations of marginal cultures, whether cultural or linguistic, are especially encouraged.

We invite individual presentations lasting twenty minutes, in French or in English, on the theme “Changing Culture, the Stakes of Displacement” in the following areas:

Studies of the South Pacific

Asian Studies

American (North and/or South) Studies

Images and Representations

Comparative Literature

World Literature and World History

Please send a short abstract (250 words) and a brief bio (including your name, professional affiliation, and e-mail address) before the end of April 2013 to each of the following organizers: david.waterman@univ-lr.fr, miceala.symington@univ-lr.fr, martine.raibaud@univ-lr.fr.

Accepted proposals will receive confirmation before 20 May 2013. The registration fee is 50 Euros, and the sessions will be open to the public and to students. We plan to publish the conference proceedings in a peer-reviewed volume, but the editor insists on a strong engagement with the conference theme as a condition of publication.

Baku Slavic University and the Azerbaijan Comparative Literature Association are pleased to invite paper proposals for a traditional joint comparative literature conference on the topic Historiography in literatures and cultures: between literature, myth and history, which will take place in Baku in 20–21 December 2013.

Call for Papers: Historiography in literatures and cultures: between literature, history and myth, 20–21 December 2013

Baku Slavic University and the Azerbaijan Comparative Literature Association are pleased to invite paper proposals for a traditional joint comparative literature conference on the topic Historiography in literatures and cultures: between literature, myth and history, which will take place in Baku in 20–21 December 2013.

This interdisciplinary conference aims to explore methodological and practical aspects of history as expression of memory and memorization of history in the text, how history locates between historical and literary genres, and how distinguish portrayal methods of history in different cultures.

History is the significant factor, which impacts in the content and forms of representation of the text, both scientific and artistic. Comparative investigation of different periods and locations, such as The Great Migration of early medieval period and migration of twentieth century, followed after collapse of modern empires; or disillusionment of newly emerged states in yesterday’s ideologies, icons and attempts to reconsider past, brought to parallels in conceptualization of past, changing the interpretation of past, or in other words, history of different period and by different people. In this context, one of the substantial issues of the day is to what extent chronicle or historical textbook are documentary, and to what extent imagination in literature and visual arts is data garbling and could be considered ethical.

Suggested panels and papers should address, but not limited, to the points and research questions below:

Is speculation in literary or visual (such as movie, poster) representation of historical events, persons, and vice-versa?

Where are the borders between literary (or any art type) genres and documentary?

Reassessment of the past in texts: incompleteness of history?

Historical itineraries and changing interpretation of depiction of history in textbooks and by different people

Are literature and culture tools for resolving contradictions of history writing?

How technologies influence into creation of documentary and fiction

How they create historical stereotypes

Literary fiction as source for undocumented stories of history

History and ideology

Literary forms and genres for representing myth and history in medieval period in different cultures (epic, kasida, oda, et al.)

Traces of history in ancient myth (as Belosnejka (Snowwhite) and seven dwarfs, or amazons in Iskender-Nameh by Nizamy)?

Collective Memory: Are they the same: Oral Literature and Oral History?

Individual memory and travelogue (travel notes) as historiography (Journey to Erzerum by A.S. Pushkin, Journey to Moscow from Peterburg by A. Radishev, Letters by Russian trekker N.M. Karamzin, travelogues by Medieval ambassadors, Seldjuk-Name or Ibn-Bibi about campaign of Turks from Asia Minor, Polovtsians and Russians to Soudak, by Ibn-Bibi)

Individual memory and diary (The Diary of Anne Frank, Azerbaijani Diary by Thomas Goltz)

Traces of history through architecture (privatized buildings by Bolsheviks in Soviet era; style of construction as influence of time, such as classic Roman-Greek style vs. modernity as described in The Fountainhead by Ayn Rand)

Proposals, which cover any relevant aspect and field are welcome in the following formats, especially with pro and cons papers

Individual papers

Panel sessions

Roundtable discussions

Working languages of the conference are Azerbaijani, Russian, and English. But if a pre-organized panel, German and French are also allowed. Papers are allotted 15 minutes for presentation and 5 minutes for discussion.

Deadline for abstract submission and panel proposal is 5 June 2013

Notification of acceptance is 15 June 2013

Conference date: 20–21 December 2013

THE CONFERENCE COMMITTEE WILL FUND ALL MEALS FOR PAPERS SELECTED, AND WILL FUND ACCOMMODATION THROUGH A CASE-BY-CASE BASIS.

Paper proposals (150-200-word abstract for a paper to last 15 minutes, brief CV no more than one page, contact information) are due by June 15, 2013 and should be sent to: rahilya_g@hotmail.com
